Recovery and Preparations

Three weeks ago I had ACL reconstructive surgery.  The surgery went well, but the first week of recovery was really rough (and worst than last time). Since that first week though, I've grown stronger, more comfortable, and more confident. I started physical therapy 2 weeks ago and am just amazed how much I can already do ... I'm walking without crutches and only wear my brace when I go out!  With surgery behind me and physical therapy off to a stupendous start, I feel like I can finally concentrate more fully on preparing to go Thailand and fund raising.

I had a really great conversation/brainstorming session with a dear friend last week who has spent some time as a missionary, lived abroad for extended periods of time, and has many missionary connections.  She had some great advice, insight and suggestions regarding how to prepare (mentally, vocationally, physically, spiritually) and what to take with me to help me feel settled in Thailand.  While I deeply appreciated our conversation and the time she spent with me, the fact that I’m leaving the states for 2 whole years began to weigh a bit on me.  As we began to talk details of different things I’ll need to take with me/get here or there, I began to feel a bit nervous.  All these things, while necessary, come at a cost ... and funds have be coming in as fast as molasses.

How I pray that God will move in people’s hearts to support me for the next 2 years on a monthly basis, but I am also in need of some generous ‘one-time gifts’ to help get me started.  It’s hard to wait for God to move, but because so many things have already fallen into place, I just have to keep trusting that this is where He wants me to be right now.  Please pray with me that needed financial support will be raised and preparations continue to go smoothly.  If you feel called to support me financially click on the “Join In!” tab above to learn more about how to do so.

Grace and Peace!

A Minor Set Back and a Great Opportunity

First, I want to apologize for not posting/updating anything recently, but I've been busy with all sorts of different activities, but it looks like I'll have more free time in the coming weeks ...

Almost 2 weeks ago, I fell and hurt my left knee while playing ultimate frisbee with some friends. Almost 3 years ago (to the day!) a similar thing happened with the same knee and I ended up getting ACL reconstruction surgery.  When I fell the other week, the pain was extremely similar to 3 years ago. I made an appointment with my doctor and called off work. I got a MRI this last Tuesday, and earlier today I saw my doctor to hear what the MRI revealed. Turns out, my "new" ACL is torn so I'm currently scheduled to have ACL reconstruction surgery on Wednesday, October 30 (my dad's birthday!).

I love my doctor. He is so great.  He is very understanding about my plans to go to Thailand in January and wants to make sure I'm healed by the time I leave, especially since he most likely won't be able to check up on me after I leave--which is why I'm able to have this surgery so soon.  If all goes well, I'll still be able to be in Thailand early next year! This is just a minor set back.

As I was sharing this information with my mom, she expressed how it will be interesting to see how God provides and what he teaches us this time around.  And I agree 110%!  "There's nothing new under the sun" seems incredibly relevant right now as exactly 3 years ago this happened to the exact same knee.  Moving forward, I definitely have more confidence and peace because I've done this before. I know what to expect, I know how to handle myself.  I'm sure I'll have pre-surgery jitters and I still hate needles and IVs, but I have great confidence in my doctor and even greater faith that God will see me through.

I'm excited to see what opportunities (to fund raise and prepare for leaving) arise through this process.

Sawadeeka!

Thanks for taking some time to check out my blog/website.  I'll still be working to update and fill in some details as well as maybe change some of the design/formatting over the next week or so, but most of the basics (what I'll be doing/who I'll be working with, how YOU can help) can be found on this site.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact me by clicking here.

Blessings!
